Nalbandian def Ferrer 6-3 6-2 6-3
Lopez def. del Potro 4-6 7-6(2) 7-6(4) 6-3
Very interesting results from the Davis Cup final. As I predicted Nalbandian kept up his high quality of play in Davis Cup easily dispatching Ferrer. Lopez took advantage of an injured del Potro and pulled the upset to level the tie. del Potro was suffering from an injured toe, and he had bit his tongue in an earlier training session causing him to lose a lot of blood. Later in the 4th set del Potro looked very weary, and called for the trainer. Lopez broke del Potro the next game and cruised to a crucial victory from there on.
As I suggested before Nalbandian has replaced Acasuso in the double lineup for the now crucial double tie this afternoon. Nalbandian wants this title more than anything for his country, and he is going to put all he has into this final. In my mind this match is too close to call, since I feel Spain has the more talented team, but I can’t count out Nalbandian to pull his to through.
The other question is will del Potro play tomorrow. He is scheduled to play the first singles match against Ferrer and that would be a tough task healthy. I think it will greatly hinge on the outcome of the doubles. I feel like he’ll try to play, but I don’t think he should. Especially if they win doubles, get the healthy man in there.
