As usual the first day of a Grand Slam had action all over the grounds and there is plenty of news to report form the Australian Open. With the temperature blazing to start the day, no seeds were upset although a few were pushed to four and some even five sets to escape through the first round. Here are a few of the seeds scores.
#2 Federer def. Seppi 6-1 7-6 7-5
#3 Djokovic def. Stoppini 6-2 6-3 7-5
#7 Roddick def. Rehnquist 6-0 6-2 6-2
#8 Del Potro def. Zverev 6-3 6-4 6-2

The draw for the 2009 Australian Open was made yesterday/today depending on where you are in the world. This post will breakdown each quarter leading to the semi finals. This is a very interesting time in men’s tennis with so much depth. That will create many interesting match ups not to mention the fact that each of the last three years one of the players in the final was in his first Grand Slam final. Despite the fact that there are a distinct top 4 players, I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened again this year.
There was quite a lot of action this past week with players looking to get quality matches in before the Australian Open. The ATP started its new 2009 season off with tournaments in Doha, Chennai, and Brisbane with 7 of the top 8 players competing this past week. 3 of the top 4 were competing in Doha, where prize money just happened to be double that of the other two tournaments.
So if all the top players were looking to sharpen up their game for the Aussie Open, their not doing such a great job of it. With all of the action this week, there have been quite a few notable upsets in the early rounds. Not to mention a few interesting matchups, that have or will take place.
Andy Murray makes a great start to the season by winning the first ever Capitala World Tennis Championships. With six top ten players competing in this exhibition, the competition was intense and despite the fact it was an “exhibition” I can guarantee nobody took this lightly.
